Structured Play & Choosing Toys
Topic: Structured Play & Choosing Toys
What we have seen is the most important aspect of the playroom is less “what toys” and more “how to use them”. Some overall suggestions to start with:- dress up items
- 1-2 simple board games
- dolls/action figures
- physical toys (hoops, balls, balance beam, swing, ball toss, bowling pins/balls, etc)
- face paints to use on him/her and you
- crayons/paper/chalk board
At your next group meeting (with whomever is helping/volunteering with your program), together as a team – take each item/toy and come up with lists of new ways to use them, and new games you can play with each one. Then, you can write down or type those ideas and post them in the hall outside your playroom. Each person can pick different ideas to try every time they go in to be with your child. So many teams have found this to be an extremely helpful tool to help get the creative juices flowing, as well as helping you to work together with your team and child (always keeping in mind – how can we use these items and create an INTERACTIVE game).
